The tradition is to make a pie with almond powder and hide a small object / La fève inside the pie. When it's time to eat, one kid is under the table and has to say who's each piece for. The one who discovers the object in his piece becomes the king and has to choose his queen and vice versa. They both received a crown in this honor!!!!
In our class, the little object was hidden in Naomi's piece of the pie. She became the queen and chose Marc as her king!
We created the crowns during workshops...we first had to trace slanted lines ( graphism) then, we needed to cut on the lines we just traced. After that, we worked with ink and salt. We put ink with a paintbrush on our crown and add salt. We let them dry and rubbed away the salt from the crown. We kept the salt in little bags made with silk paper because the salt was very pretty. Indeed, it was colorful because the ink had been absorbed. Finally, we decorated our crown with glitter... (algorithm).
We read several books about the King pie. We chose a one we already knew: "Roule Galette" and played a game linked to this book and this story. We also learned the song from the book.
The entire class made a circle (representing the pie) except one kid who is in the center. He has to choose a puppet of a character/animal of the story and will try to catch the galette when the song stops. The one who is caught goes in the center of the circle and becomes the next animal which he needs to remember from the story...
Here is the video of the song and the game we played...
We learned how to write "LA GALETTE" and how to draw a galette to illustrate the song in our song book.
We played two mathematics games about it:
The battle of the pie
The one who has the most pieces of pie wins and has to orally explain why: " I won because 8 is more than 4/ He or she lost because 4 is less than 8"...
Complete the pie
Each one has a pie. Taking turns, we have to throw 2 dices: one with digital dots from 1 to 4 and another dice with +1/+2/-1/-2 and has to take the good number of pieces to put on his pie. The winner needs to be the first to complete his entire pie.
We had a lot of fun!!!!
