Peter and the wolf and the discovery of musical instruments

We studied the musical story of Peter and the wolf both in english and in french.

We worked a lot on the name of the characters, how to recognize them in lower case and how to write them in upper case.

We also learned how to describe a picture of the book using the word "who": "I see Pierre who wants to catch the wolf...".We tried to put the pictures of the story in the right order using the ipad and we started to record ourselves retelling the story/describing the pictures on the ipad.

We worked a lot on instruments of the story. At this occasion and in order to prepare the concert that we're going to see at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, we studied instruments and tried to classify them. We have been very lucky because some parents came in our class to present us a few instruments like the trumpet (Vincent's dad), the violin ( Elizabeth's mom), the guitar (Mike from school), the clarinet ( Claire our teacher) and the piano and the Djembe that we played in the school library. We had a lot of fun listening to the instruments and playing with them. We already learned a lot of things...and we'll continue to discover other instruments after February Break.

Claire, our teacher played the clarinet for us and we were so happy to recognize the theme of the cat in "Peter and the wolf". Here is a little video about it:

On Saturday  February 22d, we went to the Walt Disney concert hall and we listened to Tchaikovsky music ( the same composer of "Swan Lake": the music that we use for our winterfest). It was very interesting because we saw an entire orchestra and we recognized the instruments. Here are some pictures of this event:

We started a very interesting project with Florence Delva, a photographer. We created the characters and the sets of the story with stencils. And like a  shadow play we made our own story with pictures...we'll continue this work after the February break in order to create a book on the ipad or on paper and we'll be able to comment those pictures and retell the entire story...

To position correctly the set of each scene of the book, we work on the spatial positions...Florence also took pictures of us in different positions to help us to master this vocabulary. We're gonna create a game about positions and opposits with Florence's pictures after February break.
